December 19, 2025 - While reviewing archived OSINT materials, we discovered a collection of screenshots documenting the November 2022 Twitter verification crisis in real-time. These images capture a coordinated parody campaign that exploited the $8 blue check system within hours of its launch.
The identity of the operators remains unknown. But the methodology is worth studying.
Background: The $8 Verification Experiment
On November 9, 2022, Twitter (now X) launched a paid verification system allowing anyone to purchase a blue checkmark for $8/month. Within hours, parody accounts flooded the platform, impersonating brands, politicians, and public figures.
The chaos was historic. These screenshots document it from the inside.
The Parody Account: @ElonMuskRealz
An unknown operator created @ElonMuskRealz with the bio "I'm rich, biyatch!" and proceeded to reply to high-profile accounts while verified.
*The @ElonMuskRealz profile during the November 2022 chaos. Bio: "I'm rich, biyatch!" Note the blue verification badge purchased for $8.*
Documented Interactions
1. Replying to the Real Elon Musk
When the real @elonmusk tweeted "We do" in response to a question about tortious interference claims, @ElonMuskRealz replied:
> "Or do we? #WakandaForever"
*The parody account directly engaging with the real Elon Musk's tweets.*
2. Asking Mark Hamill About His Check
When Mark Hamill posted a single blue checkmark emoji, @ElonMuskRealz replied:
> "Hey wait - did you pay $8 for that check?!?"
*Engaging with celebrity accounts while impersonating the platform owner.*
3. The Jim Jordan Reply
When Rep. Jim Jordan tweeted about election results, @ElonMuskRealz responded:
> "And you should be reporting showering pedophiles. Ain't the world a loony place? #wakandaforever"
*A reference to the Ohio State wrestling scandal.*
4. The Mark Cuban Exchange
Mark Cuban posted advice to Elon about muting checkmark accounts (59.4K likes). @ElonMuskRealz replied:
> "You make with the free Mavericks tickets and I'll make with the ol' Twitterooski. And I'll toss in a box of Mike & Ike's."
5. The Tesla Parody Collaboration
A parody @TeslaReal account tweeted about the 53% stock drop: "if there's anyone who knows about Crashing it's us" (1,153 likes). @ElonMuskRealz replied:
> "BACK TO WORK, DAMN IT! Putting the finishing touches on the new standing/eating/pooping desk at Twitter HQ, then you're getting more Musky stankonya."
6. The Chiquita Banana Incident
The most famous moment of the chaos: a parody @ChiquitaBrands account tweeted "We've just overthrown the government of Brazil." Real Chiquita had to respond: "We have not overthrown a government since 1954."
@ElonMuskRealz was there, replying to the thread:
> "You're welcome. And hey - thanks for the $8."
*The Chiquita incident became international news. The parody operator was documenting in real-time.*
7. Michael Dell Joins the Chaos
Even the real Michael Dell got involved, tweeting "Define parody" in response to Elon's new rules, then: "Tried to edit my profile name to include occasional parody and it said 'Deny'. Not kidding!"
@ElonMuskRealz replied to Dell's question about Twitter debt: "Just make with the $8, pal."
8. The Bankruptcy Tweet
When news broke that Twitter executives had resigned and Musk mentioned bankruptcy to employees, @ElonMuskRealz replied:
> "My plan is working! Muahahahahahaha! #wakandaforever"
9. The George W. Bush Parody Network
The screenshots capture a network of parody accounts working in parallel. @GeorgeWBushs tweeted "I miss killing Iraqis" while a parody Tony Blair retweeted "Same tbh."
@ElonMuskRealz replied: "As long as you're not using drones. WFH is forbidden. #wakandaforever"
*Ken Klippenstein's observation: "Twitter feels like a Bosch painting since Elon took over"*
10. The Gollum Trump Account
@realGollumTrump posted Trump-as-Gollum content about "THE PRECIOUS." @ElonMuskRealz replied:
> "I support this message. Also, you're banned. #WakandaForever"

The Platform Response
Within days, Elon Musk announced new rules requiring parody accounts to include "parody" in their display name, not just bio. The real Michael Dell documented that he couldn't add "occasional parody" to his name - the system denied it.

Analysis: What This Tells Us
1. Verification as Trust Architecture The $8 system assumed money = accountability. It actually created a market for chaos.
2. Response Time Parody accounts were operational within hours of the system launch. The operators were prepared.
3. Network Effects The screenshots show coordinated activity - George W. Bush, Tesla, Chiquita, Gollum Trump - suggesting either a network of operators or rapid memetic spread.
4. The #WakandaForever Signature Every @ElonMuskRealz tweet included #WakandaForever or a Black Panther emoji. This was operational signature - a way to mark the content as parody while maximizing chaos.
5. Platform Security Implications When verification becomes purchasable, impersonation becomes trivial. The blue check's value was its scarcity. $8 destroyed that.
The Lesson
The November 2022 Twitter chaos was a live demonstration of platform security failure. The operator(s) behind @ElonMuskRealz understood this intuitively: verification systems are trust architecture, and trust architecture fails catastrophically when the gatekeeping mechanism is removed.
Cost of the operation: $8
Duration before ban: ~3 days
Cultural impact: Part of internet history
