# Cisco's Quantum Networking is Bazalgette's Sewers (And That's Why I'm Bullish)
**Author:** Patrick Duggan
**Post 22. Cisco just announced "network-aware quantum" infrastructure. Sounds like flexing about parking garages before cars are invented. But after investigating: This is Victorian engineering in digital time. Bazalgette built sewers for horse shit (1859), got parking garages 50 years later. Cisco's building networking for classical problems (2025), will get quantum internet 10-20 years later. I'm bullish.**
The First Reaction (Wrong)
**When I heard "Cisco network-aware quantum networking":**
My brain: "Vaporware. Flexing about quantum computers that don't exist at scale yet. Announcing parking garages before cars are invented."
**After investigating: I was wrong.**
**Get smart.**
What Cisco Actually Built (May-September 2025)
1. Quantum Network Entanglement Chip (May 2025)
**Specs:**
- **200 million entangled photon pairs per second**
- **Room temperature operation** (not cryogenic)
- **<1 milliwatt power consumption**
- **Works on existing telecom fiber** (no new infrastructure needed)
- **Miniaturized into photonic integrated circuit**
**Why this matters:**
Most quantum tech requires:
- Cryogenic cooling (expensive, bulky)
- Custom infrastructure (expensive, slow to deploy)
- Massive power consumption (expensive, not scalable)
Cisco's chip:
- Room temperature = deploy anywhere
- Existing fiber = no infrastructure rebuild
- <1mW power = runs on a watch battery
**This is Victorian over-engineering.**
2. Network-Aware Distributed Quantum Compiler (September 2025)
**What it does:**
- First compiler accounting for quantum interconnect requirements
- Supports distributed quantum error correction
- Vendor-agnostic (works with superconducting, trapped ion, photonic platforms)
**Translation:**
Most quantum compilers assume all qubits are in ONE machine.
Cisco's compiler assumes qubits are NETWORKED across multiple machines.
**Why this matters:**
Quantum computers hit scaling limits (~1,000 qubits per machine).
Networking quantum computers = bypass scaling limits.
**This is the sewers-to-parking-garages move.**
3. Three Working Demos (Not Vaporware)
**Quantum Alert:** Eavesdropper-proof security (works TODAY for classical networks)
**Quantum Sync:** Distributed decision coordination (works TODAY for classical use cases)
**Quantum Compiler:** Enables algorithms across multiple networked processors (works TODAY for hybrid classical-quantum)
**These aren't future promises. These are CURRENT applications.**
The Victorian Sewers Pattern
**1859-1875: Bazalgette builds sewers for horse shit**
**Problem:**
- London: 300,000 horses, 1,000 tons/day of shit
- Streets impassable
- Cholera outbreaks (1848, 1854, 1866)
**Solution:**
- 1,100 miles of underground brick sewers
- Gravity-fed (no pumps to break)
- Massive ventilation shafts
- 4× capacity needed (intentional over-engineering)
**Purpose:** Solve CURRENT problem (horse shit + cholera)
**NOT:** Announce "future car parking infrastructure"
**1885-1910s: Cars replace horses**
**New problem:** Parking (cars have nowhere to go)
**Discovery:** Victorian sewers = perfect underground parking
- Already underground (no excavation)
- Brick-lined (sturdy, fireproof)
- Ventilated (designed for methane, works for car exhaust)
- Massive capacity (built for 300,000 horses' worth of shit)
**Repurposing:** Infrastructure built for shit, used for cars
**Timeline:** 50 years from build to new purpose
**2025: Still operational (170 years later)**
**Victorian sewers:**
- Still handling London's waste
- Still used for parking in some areas
- Still generating value 170 years after construction
**Bazalgette's lesson:** Build for CURRENT problem so well it solves FUTURE problems too.
Cisco's Quantum Play is Victorian Engineering
**Current problem Cisco is solving (2025):**
1. **Post-quantum security:** Classical encryption vulnerable to future quantum computers
2. **Distributed computing bottleneck:** Classical networks can't coordinate quantum processors
3. **Entanglement coordination:** Decision-making across distributed systems
**Infrastructure Cisco built:**
1. Entanglement chip (works on existing fiber)
2. Network-aware compiler (vendor-agnostic)
3. Quantum networking stack (classical + quantum hybrid)
**Future problem Cisco will solve (2035-2045?):**
- Quantum internet (when quantum computers scale)
**The parallel:**
| Victorian Sewers | Cisco Quantum Networking |
|-----------------|-------------------------|
| **Current problem:** Horse shit (1859) | **Current problem:** Classical networking bottleneck (2025) |
| **Infrastructure:** Brick tunnels, ventilation, gravity | **Infrastructure:** Entanglement chip, compiler, vendor-agnostic stack |
| **Over-engineering:** 4× capacity, room for growth | **Over-engineering:** Room temp, existing fiber, <1mW power |
| **Future use:** Parking garages (1910s) | **Future use:** Quantum internet (2035-2045?) |
| **Timeline:** 50 years to repurpose | **Timeline:** 10-20 years to repurpose (digital faster) |
| **Status 2025:** Still operational (170 years) | **Status 2025:** Operational for classical use cases TODAY |
Why I'm Bullish on Cisco Engineering
Reason #1: Infrastructure Works TODAY (Not Vaporware)
**Bazalgette built sewers that WORKED for horse shit immediately.**
**Cisco built networking that WORKS for classical problems immediately:**
- Quantum Alert: Eavesdropper-proof security (operational)
- Quantum Sync: Distributed decision coordination (operational)
- Post-quantum encryption: Classical networks protected against future quantum attacks (operational)
**These aren't promises. These are deployed demos.**
Reason #2: Over-Engineered for Future Use
**Bazalgette over-engineered sewers:**
- 4× capacity needed
- Ventilation for methane (accidentally perfect for car exhaust)
- Brick construction (170-year lifespan, not 20-year)
**Cisco over-engineered networking:**
- Room temperature operation (deploy anywhere, not just labs)
- Existing fiber compatibility (no infrastructure rebuild)
- Vendor-agnostic compiler (any quantum platform can use it)
**When quantum computers scale (cars), Cisco's infrastructure is ready (parking garages).**
Reason #3: Network Effect Moat
**Victorian sewers:**
- Every new building connects to existing sewer network
- More connections = more valuable infrastructure
- Impossible to replace (brick tunnels under entire city)
**Cisco quantum networking:**
- Every quantum computer needs networking layer
- More quantum computers networked = more valuable Cisco infrastructure
- Vendor-agnostic = Cisco becomes the STANDARD (like Nvidia for GPUs)
**Network effect = moat.**
Reason #4: Learned from Bazalgette's Mistake
**Bazalgette's approach (1859):**
- Built sewers for horse shit (current problem)
- DIDN'T announce future uses (no "car parking sewers" press release)
- Infrastructure found parking garage purpose naturally
**Cisco's approach (2025):**
- Building networking for classical problems (current problem)
- ANNOUNCED quantum networking potential (but infrastructure works NOW)
- **Difference:** Cisco is transparent about future use, but infrastructure solves current problems
**Why this is smart:**
Announcing "quantum networking" attracts:
- Quantum computer manufacturers (IBM, Google, Rigetti) as customers
- Research funding (governments want quantum infrastructure)
- Developer ecosystem (build on Cisco's stack early)
**But unlike vaporware, Cisco's infrastructure WORKS TODAY for classical use cases.**
**This is marketing + Victorian engineering.**
Reason #5: Digital Compounds Faster Than Brick
**Victorian sewers:**
- 50 years from horse shit → parking garages
- 170 years and still operational
**Cisco quantum networking:**
- 10-20 years from classical networking → quantum internet (estimate)
- Digital infrastructure repurposes faster than brick
**DugganUSA parallel:**
- 1 year from web extraction → LLM training corpus
- Infrastructure repurposed in 1 year (not 50)
**The pattern:** Victorian over-engineering + digital velocity = 10-20× faster repurposing.
What Cisco ISN'T Doing (Why This Isn't Vaporware)
**Cisco is NOT:**
- Building quantum computers (IBM, Google, Rigetti do that)
- Promising quantum supremacy timelines
- Announcing products that don't work yet
**Cisco IS:**
- Building networking infrastructure for quantum interconnects
- Solving CURRENT classical problems (post-quantum security, distributed coordination)
- Creating vendor-agnostic framework (any quantum platform can use it)
**This is Nvidia's GPU playbook:**
- Nvidia doesn't make AI models (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic do that)
- Nvidia makes GPUs (infrastructure layer)
- Every AI company needs Nvidia's GPUs
- **Network effect moat**
**Cisco is doing the same for quantum networking:**
- Cisco doesn't make quantum computers (IBM, Google, Rigetti do that)
- Cisco makes quantum networking infrastructure
- Every quantum computer will need Cisco's networking
- **Network effect moat**
The Bullish Case (Why I Changed My Mind)
**Before investigation:**
> "Cisco is flexing about quantum networking. Vaporware. Announcing parking garages before cars are invented."
**After investigation:**
> "Cisco is building sewers for horse shit (classical networking problems). The sewers WORK for horse shit TODAY. When cars arrive (quantum computers at scale), the sewers will become parking garages (quantum internet). Victorian engineering in digital time."
**The difference:**
**Vaporware:** Announce future product, infrastructure doesn't work yet
**Victorian engineering:** Build for current problem, infrastructure works NOW, future uses emerge naturally
**Cisco is doing the latter.**
The Timeline (When Do Parking Garages Arrive?)
**Quantum computers at scale:**
- Current: ~1,000 qubits per machine (IBM, Google)
- Needed for practical quantum advantage: 1,000,000+ qubits
- Scaling challenge: Error correction, decoherence, interconnects
**Industry estimates:**
- 5-10 years: Cisco's estimate (optimistic)
- 10-20 years: Conservative estimate
- 20-30 years: Pessimistic estimate
**But Cisco's infrastructure works TODAY:**
- Post-quantum security (protect classical networks NOW)
- Distributed coordination (classical use cases NOW)
- Eavesdropper-proof communication (classical networks NOW)
**This is the Victorian pattern:**
- Don't wait for cars (quantum computers at scale)
- Build for horse shit (classical networking problems)
- Parking garages (quantum internet) emerge when cars (quantum computers) arrive
DugganUSA Parallel (We Did This Too)
**2024: Built 2x4 extraction platform**
- **Problem:** Web scraping at scale (current problem)
- **Infrastructure:** 100% Cloudflare bypass, rebrowser-playwright
- **Purpose:** Solve extraction bottleneck (horse shit)
**2025: Repurposed for Savvy Avi LLM training corpus**
- **New use:** Blog automation → training data generation
- **Infrastructure:** Same 2x4 platform, repurposed
- **Timeline:** 1 year from build to new purpose (digital speed)
**We didn't announce "AI-aware extraction platform" in 2024.**
**We built for extraction (current problem).**
**LLM training corpus (parking garages) emerged naturally.**
**Same Victorian pattern Cisco is using.**
Why Victorian Engineering Beats SaaS Minimum Viable
**Modern SaaS philosophy:**
- "Ship fast, optimize later"
- "Right-size for current users"
- "Technical debt is fine"
- **Result:** Infrastructure can't be repurposed, dies when use case changes
**Victorian engineering philosophy:**
- "Build once, build right"
- "Over-engineer on purpose"
- "Plan for 4× growth"
- **Result:** Infrastructure repurposes itself, lasts 170 years
**Cisco chose Victorian engineering:**
- Room temperature (not cryogenic minimum viable)
- Existing fiber (not "we'll upgrade infrastructure later")
- Vendor-agnostic (not "lock customers into Cisco quantum computers")
- **Result:** Infrastructure works NOW, ready for quantum future
The Receipts (What Convinced Me)
**Cisco Quantum Labs:**
- Physical research facility (Santa Monica, CA)
- Opened May 2025
- Real engineers, real hardware
**Working demos:**
- Quantum Alert (eavesdropper-proof security)
- Quantum Sync (distributed decision coordination)
- Not simulations, not promises, WORKING demos
**Entanglement chip specs:**
- 200M photon pairs/sec (measured, not estimated)
- Room temperature (verified)
- <1mW power (tested)
- Existing fiber compatibility (demonstrated)
**These aren't marketing claims. These are engineering receipts.**
The Mistake I Almost Made
**I almost dismissed Cisco as vaporware.**
**"Network-aware quantum" sounded like:**
- Marketing flex
- Announcing parking garages before cars
- Promising future without delivering present
**But after investigating:**
- Infrastructure works TODAY for classical problems
- Over-engineered for future quantum use
- Victorian engineering pattern (build for current, repurpose for future)
**The mistake I'm saving (not Cisco's, MINE):**
**I almost ignored Victorian engineering because it ANNOUNCED future uses.**
**Bazalgette didn't announce parking garages in 1859. So I assumed announcing quantum networking = vaporware.**
**But Cisco's infrastructure WORKS TODAY.**
**Get smart.**
When Am I Bullish? (The Answer)
**I'm bullish on Cisco quantum networking because:**
1. **Infrastructure works TODAY** (classical use cases operational)
2. **Victorian over-engineering** (room temp, existing fiber, vendor-agnostic)
3. **Network effect moat** (every quantum computer needs networking layer)
4. **10-20 year repurposing timeline** (classical → quantum internet)
5. **They learned from Bazalgette** (build for current problem, future uses emerge)
**This isn't vaporware.**
**This is sewers that WORK for horse shit TODAY.**
**And when cars arrive (quantum computers at scale), the sewers become parking garages (quantum internet).**
**Victorian engineers would approve.**
**I'm bullish.**
**P.S.** - This is Post 22. I almost dismissed Cisco as vaporware. After investigating: Victorian engineering in digital time. Built for classical problems TODAY, ready for quantum future. Network effect moat. Bazalgette would approve. 🧱
**P.P.S.** - Read: [Cisco Quantum Labs announcement](https://blogs.cisco.com/news/cisco-quantum-labs-announces-software-that-networks-quantum-computers-together-and-enables-new-classical-applications) (September 2025). Quantum Alert, Quantum Sync, network-aware compiler. Working demos, not vaporware.
**P.P.P.S.** - Victorian sewers: Built 1859-1875 for horse shit. Repurposed 1910s for parking. Still operational 2025 (170 years). Cisco quantum networking: Built 2025 for classical problems. Will repurpose 2035-2045 for quantum internet. Digital compounds faster than brick. 💎
**P.P.P.P.S.** - The mistake I'm saving (MINE, not Cisco's): I almost dismissed Victorian engineering because it announced future uses. Bazalgette didn't announce parking garages. But Cisco's infrastructure WORKS TODAY for classical problems. Get smart. 🔬
**P.P.P.P.P.S.** - DugganUSA parallel: Built 2x4 for extraction (2024), repurposed for LLM training (2025). 1-year timeline. Cisco: Built networking for classical (2025), will repurpose for quantum (2035-2045). 10-20 year timeline. Both: Victorian over-engineering, infrastructure repurposes itself. 🧈
