The Oversight I Just Realized
I've been documenting how we pay musicians throughout this blog. José Feliciano got links to his streaming platforms. GWAR got buy links for their albums. Tom Waits got portfolio visibility. Iggy Pop got cultural attribution.
**But I completely overlooked VISUAL ARTISTS.**
My good friend **Joseph Guillette** - brother from another mother - called this out without saying a word. He's been sharing his art on Instagram, and I just realized: **where's HIS compensation link?**
This post fixes that oversight and explains why visual artists matter just as much as musicians to what we're building at DugganUSA.
Who Is Joseph Guillette?
**The Resume:**
- **MTV's "I Bet You Will" (2002):** Art Director
- **"Super Size Me" (2004):** Art and Animation Director (Morgan Spurlock's documentary that killed McDonald's Supersize menu)
- **Arlene's Grocery:** Regular at NYC's legendary rock venue (CBGB's spiritual successor)
- **Metal Vocalist:** Does THE BEST Accept "Balls to the Wall" cover you've ever heard
- **Visual Artist:** Currently sharing work on Instagram
**The Ethos:** All that is metal. Pure, uncompromising, authentic.
**The Relationship:** Brother from another mother. The kind of friendship where you don't need to explain why something matters - you just know.
Why This Matters: The Artist Compensation Gap
**What I've Been Doing:**
Musical Artists (Documented Throughout Blog)
- **José Feliciano:** Spotify/Apple Music links for "Chico and the Man" theme
- **GWAR:** Buy links for albums ("This Toilet Earth")
- **Tom Waits:** Website links, streaming platforms
- **Iggy Pop:** Cultural references with attribution
- **Accept:** Links to "Balls to the Wall" (the song Joseph covers)
**What I Wasn't Doing:**
Visual Artists (ZERO Documentation Until Now)
- **Joseph Guillette:** No portfolio link, no Instagram visibility, no commission opportunities
- **Other visual artists:** None referenced despite visual design being CRITICAL to our work
**The Math:**
- Musicians referenced in blog corpus: 15+
- Musical artists with compensation links: 15+
- Visual artists referenced: 1 (Joseph)
- Visual artists with compensation links: 0
**ROI on fixing this: Infinite** (going from zero to something = undefined denominator)
What Joseph Taught Me (Without Knowing It)
1. "I Bet You Will" = Proof of Concept Culture
**Joseph's Show (MTV 2002):**
- Dare people to do ridiculous stunts
- Film the attempt
- Prove it happened (or failed spectacularly)
- Entertainment through evidence
**My Blog (DugganUSA 2025):**
- Claim ridiculous things (81% SOC1 at $77/month)
- Document every deployment (git commits, session evidence)
- Prove it works (16 days production, zero critical CVEs)
- **Technical entertainment through receipts**
**The Parallel:** Both of us make people believe unbelievable claims by SHOWING THE WORK.
**Joseph's art direction:** Make the stunts visual proof, not just verbal claims
**My infrastructure work:** Make the deployments visible evidence, not just marketing bullshit
2. "Super Size Me" = System Abuse Testing
**Joseph's Documentary Work (2004):**
- Morgan Spurlock ate McDonald's for 30 days straight
- Joseph art-directed the visual evidence
- Showed what happens when you abuse a food system
- **Changed corporate behavior** (McDonald's killed Supersize menu)
**My Infrastructure Work (2025):**
- I abuse Claude Code for 114K+ token sessions
- Document what breaks (Cloudflare blamed twice, Docker version drift)
- Show what happens when you stress AI systems
- **Extract value from disasters** (patents, learning patterns)
**The Parallel:** Both of us stress-test systems and document the results to change behavior.
**Joseph:** Visual proof that McDonald's will literally kill you
**Me:** Technical proof that 95% of enterprise security is theater
**Both:** Evidence-based disruption through systematic abuse testing
3. Metal Aesthetic = Born Without Sin Aesthetic
**Joseph's Metal Ethos:**
- Pure, uncompromising sound
- No corporate sanitization
- Authentic to the roots (Accept's "Balls to the Wall" is PURE 1983 German metal)
- Arlene's Grocery = real venue, not corporate amphitheater
**My Infrastructure Ethos:**
- Pure, modern architecture
- No enterprise bloat
- Authentic to BSD roots (FreeBSD/OpenBSD philosophy)
- **Born Without Sin** = metal approach to security
**The Parallel:** Both reject compromise for authenticity.
**Accept "Balls to the Wall" (1983):** German metal band refusing to dilute their sound for American radio
**DugganUSA "Born Without Sin" (2025):** Startup refusing to add enterprise bloat for Fortune 500 contracts
**Both:** Authenticity over revenue, always
4. Arlene's Grocery = The Real Scene
**What Arlene's Grocery Represents:**
- Real NYC rock venue (not corporate Madison Square Garden)
- Where actual artists perform (not manufactured pop stars)
- Community over commerce
- **The scene matters as much as the music**
**What DugganUSA Represents:**
- Real infrastructure (not enterprise theater)
- Where actual work gets done (not PowerPoint decks)
- Results over marketing
- **The proof matters as much as the pitch**
**The Parallel:** Both prioritize authenticity over scale.
**Arlene's Grocery capacity:** ~250 people (intimate, real)
**DugganUSA customer count:** 1 (Paul Galjan - intimate, real)
**Madison Square Garden capacity:** 20,000 people (massive, manufactured)
**Enterprise SIEM customers:** Thousands (massive, theatrical)
**We're Arlene's Grocery. Not MSG. By choice.**
The Visual Artist Compensation Problem
**Why Musicians Get Paid (Barely):**
- Streaming platforms exist (Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp)
- Physical media sales (vinyl, CDs, merch)
- Concert tickets (direct artist support)
- **Payout:** $0.003-$0.005 per stream (garbage, but something)
**Why Visual Artists Don't Get Paid:**
- Instagram = $0 per post (pure exposure bullshit)
- Portfolio sites = free marketing for platforms, zero artist revenue
- "Exposure" = dying of exposure like it's hypothermia
- **Payout:** $0.00 per impression (worse than garbage)
**The Math:**
- Musical artist with 1M Spotify streams: $3,000-$5,000 (barely survival)
- Visual artist with 1M Instagram impressions: **$0** (actual zero)
**The Injustice:** Visual artists create the LOOK that makes everything else work, and get paid NOTHING for it.
How DugganUSA Fixes This
The Musician Model (Already Implemented)
**When I reference musicians:**
1. **Name them** (proper attribution)
2. **Link to their work** (Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp)
3. **Explain why they matter** (cultural context)
4. **Direct traffic to purchase** (buy albums, concert tickets)
**Example (GWAR):**
- Reference: Dave Brockie / Oderus Urungus in blog post about artistic voice
- Link: https://gwar.net/collections/music
- Context: Theatrical metal with PURPOSE (anti-war satire through chaos)
- Call-to-action: Buy "This Toilet Earth" album
**Result:** Readers who click = potential album sales = artist gets paid
The Visual Artist Model (NEW - Joseph Guillette Inspired)
**When I reference visual artists:**
1. **Name them** (Joseph Guillette)
2. **Link to their portfolio** (Instagram, website)
3. **Explain why they matter** (cultural + technical context)
4. **Create commission opportunities** (actual paid work)
**Example (Joseph Guillette):**
- **Reference:** "I Bet You Will" art direction = proof of concept culture
- **Link:** [Instagram portfolio] (commission inquiries welcome)
- **Context:** Visual storytelling + system abuse testing + metal aesthetic
- **Call-to-action:** Commission work for status pages, pitch decks, blog imagery
**Result:** Readers who need visual work = potential commissions = artist gets paid ACTUAL money
The Commission Opportunity
**What DugganUSA Needs (And Will Pay For):**
1. Status Page Illustrations
- **Current:** Text + metrics (functional but boring)
- **Vision:** Visual representations of "Born Without Sin" architecture
- **Style:** Metal aesthetic meets technical diagrams
- **Artist fit:** Joseph's "I Bet You Will" + "Super Size Me" visual storytelling
2. Pitch Deck Visuals
- **Current:** Charts + graphs (investor-facing but sterile)
- **Vision:** Visual narrative of Dell/Microsoft shared responsibility failure
- **Style:** Documentary art direction (show, don't tell)
- **Artist fit:** Joseph's "Super Size Me" documentary visual proof methodology
3. Blog Post Imagery
- **Current:** No images (pure text)
- **Vision:** Visual representations of technical concepts
- **Style:** Make abstract infrastructure visceral
- **Artist fit:** Joseph's MTV art direction (make boring concepts entertaining)
4. Patent Portfolio Illustrations
- **Current:** Legal documents (boring as hell)
- **Vision:** Visual explanations of novel IP
- **Style:** Technical accuracy meets artistic clarity
- **Artist fit:** Joseph's animation work (make complex systems understandable)
The Compensation Model
**Standard Visual Artist "Payment":**
- Instagram exposure: $0
- Portfolio visibility: $0
- "Great for your portfolio!": $0 + insult
**DugganUSA Visual Artist Payment:**
- **Commission rate:** $500-$2,000 per illustration (depends on complexity)
- **Licensing:** Artist retains rights, DugganUSA gets perpetual use license
- **Attribution:** Name + portfolio link on EVERY use
- **Residuals:** 10% of any future licensing to third parties
**Why This Works:**
- Artists get PAID (not exposure)
- Artists keep ownership (not work-for-hire)
- Artists get ongoing visibility (every blog post reuse = new traffic)
- Artists get residuals (if we license to others, they get cut)
**The Math:**
- 1 status page illustration: $1,000
- 1 pitch deck visual package: $2,000
- 10 blog post images: $5,000-$10,000
- **Potential annual work:** $8,000-$13,000
**vs Instagram exposure:** $0
Why This Matters Beyond Joseph
**The Pattern I'm Seeing:**
Artists Get Screwed Systematically
1. **Musicians:** Spotify pays $0.003/stream (crumbs)
2. **Visual artists:** Instagram pays $0/impression (nothing)
3. **Writers:** Medium pays $0.01/read (insulting)
4. **Photographers:** Stock photo sites pay $0.25/download (robbery)
**The Promise:** "Exposure will lead to paid work!"
**The Reality:** Exposure leads to more exposure requests
**The Fix:** Direct artist-to-customer relationships with TRANSPARENT PRICING
The DugganUSA Artist Registry (Future)
**Vision:** Portfolio page for all artists who influence our work
**Musical Artists:**
- José Feliciano (referenced: "Chico and the Man")

**Why Public Metrics:** Prove we're not bullshitting about paying artists
The Joseph Guillette Standard
**Going Forward, Every Artist Reference Will:**
1. **Include portfolio link** (Instagram, website, Bandcamp, etc.)
2. **Explain why they matter** (cultural + technical context)
3. **Create purchase/commission opportunity** (how to pay them)
4. **Track engagement** (did we drive traffic/revenue?)
**Named after Joseph because:**
- He made me realize the visual artist gap
- His work exemplifies proof-of-concept culture
- Brother from another mother = trust + respect
- All that is metal = authenticity over bullshit
The Invitation

2. **Commission actual work** (pay real money)
3. **Track the results** (prove I'm helping)
**Contact:** [email protected]
