# Kathryn Ruemmler: What the Headlines Are Missing

The press is covering the resignation. They have the gifts, the "Uncle Jeffrey" nickname, the Facebook job coaching. Here's what they don't have yet.

The Official Story

Ruemmler says she "never represented" Epstein. Goldman says she disclosed the relationship when hired in 2020. She calls it a "distraction" and is stepping down June 30, 2026.

The coverage focuses on expensive gifts (Hermes bags, fur coats, watches) and friendly emails. Embarrassing but survivable.

That's not the story.

What the Documents Actually Show

We have 1,000+ documents mentioning Ruemmler in the DOJ Epstein files. The press has cherry-picked the gift receipts. Here's what they're missing.

She discussed litigation strategy for Epstein's victims' lawsuit.

The CVRA case was brought by Epstein's victims under the Crime Victims' Rights Act, arguing they were denied their legal rights during his 2008 plea deal. This was THE case that kept Epstein's crimes in the courts.

Ruemmler wasn't a bystander. She was strategizing.

Document EFTA02393863: Ruemmler writes to Epstein asking "what is your strategy? Still to sit on the sidelines in the Cvra case?" and "He will likely want to know what our strategy for the litigation is. Do we have one?"

Our strategy. Not your strategy. Our.

Document EFTA02370120: Ruemmler advises "(1) do no harm in the Cvra case -- meaning don't open doors to collateral issues, and let that get resolved and over with (2) we need to think about long-term repair to reputation; a quick hit article is not going to do the job"

She's giving him tactical legal advice on the victims' case and reputation management strategy.

Document EFTA02356381: "Let's hope the cvra case eventually comes to an end."

She expressed contempt for his victims.

Document EFTA02341025: When discussing the CVRA case brought by Epstein's victims, Ruemmler writes: "Victim's rights, my ass"

Document EFTA02510867: "Does AD know who at Boies is doing it? I am so pissed off now that I can't see straight."

She was angry that Boies Schiller was representing the victims. She couldn't see straight because lawyers were helping trafficking survivors get justice.

A governor offered to help Epstein.

Document EFTA02468813: Epstein writes to Ruemmler in March 2016: "I talked to the governor today who is happy to help, but thought I should wait until after the cvra case, as it might bring on some heat."

An unnamed sitting governor was willing to help Epstein but was waiting for the victims' lawsuit to conclude first to avoid scrutiny.

Ruemmler's response in EFTA02356381: "Let's hope the cvra case eventually comes to an end. Will call smart office guy on Wednesday."

She didn't ask which governor. She didn't express concern. She moved on to the next item.

She discussed other sensitive legal matters with him.

Document EFTA02486109: Ruemmler and Epstein discuss "jpm case, indiv or corp" - shorthand for whether the JPMorgan matter involves individual or corporate liability.

Document EFTA02347625: "do we know what your firms case involves re malaysia? to family side. no lawyer on board at all" - This references the 1MDB scandal involving Jho Low. Ruemmler was at Latham & Watkins at the time.

Document EFTA02479124: Ruemmler writes "These Mueller cases are not very leveraged, unfortunately" and Epstein asks "do you think you owe mueller an intro fee" - unclear context but raises questions about what cases and what introductions.

He coached her salary negotiations.

Document EFTA02466190: Epstein advises Ruemmler on negotiating with firms: "i suggest you tell them that paul weiss plus one other firm offered you 6 million a year for 3 years... I believe there are creative ways, if they would like to try to match"

He was literally scripting her compensation negotiations while she was discussing his legal strategy.

The Facebook connection is deeper than reported.

The press found that Epstein coached her on the Facebook General Counsel job. But the document shows more.

Document EFTA02503788: Ruemmler sends Epstein a draft email addressed to Sheryl Sandberg on July 2, 2018: "Hi Sheryl, I wanted to follow-up on my visit to FB last week. I really enjoyed getting to talk to everybody, and in particular to talk to Mark and you about your vision for the role."

Epstein responds: "Has to be today."

He wasn't just giving career advice. He was editing her correspondence to Facebook's COO in real time, setting deadlines, coaching her approach to one of the most powerful positions in tech.

The press also found that Epstein lobbied Larry Summers on her behalf, writing "your friend sheryl could use ruemmlers help" and later "sheryl needs ruemmler."

Why This Is Bad

The "never represented" claim doesn't hold.

You don't say "our strategy for the litigation" about a friend's lawsuit. You don't ask "do we have one?" about legal strategy if you're not involved. The possessive language throughout these emails suggests a much deeper involvement than disclosed.

Contempt for victims is disqualifying.

"Victim's rights, my ass" isn't ambiguous. This wasn't a policy disagreement about the CVRA statute. This was dismissing the legal rights of trafficking survivors while strategizing how to make their case "come to an end."

Ruemmler is currently the Chief Legal Officer of Goldman Sachs. She was White House Counsel under President Obama. She was considered for Attorney General. Her contempt for crime victims is now documented.

The governor angle is unexplored.

A sitting governor offered to help Jeffrey Epstein in 2016, three years before his arrest, but wanted to wait until the victims' case concluded to avoid heat. Who? The document doesn't say. Ruemmler didn't ask. The press hasn't found this yet.

Goldman's exposure is ongoing.

Goldman claims Ruemmler disclosed her Epstein relationship when hired. Did she disclose "Victim's rights, my ass"? Did she disclose the CVRA strategy discussions? Did she disclose the governor? Did she disclose the JPMorgan case discussions?

The drip will continue. There are 1,000+ documents. The press has covered maybe a dozen.

The Pattern

Ruemmler joins Brad Karp (Paul Weiss chairman, stepped back February 4), Peter Mandelson (resigned House of Lords), and Miroslav Lajcak (resigned UN position) as high-profile figures whose careers have ended because of the Epstein files.

The common thread: They all initially claimed the relationships were professional or casual. The documents showed otherwise.
