# "R U in NY": A Former Treasury Secretary Invited Jeffrey Epstein to His Home

**Larry Summers — former U.S. Treasury Secretary, former President of Harvard, Obama's top economic advisor — texted Jeffrey Epstein from the Carlyle Hotel asking to meet. Invited him to his private home in Brookline, Massachusetts. Had dinner with him and Woody Allen seven months before the FBI showed up. Was "at the top of the list" for every Epstein trip to Cambridge across six years. We found 55 government-released documents. Here's what's in them.**

**December 14, 2017.** A text message from an iPhone, sender identified as "LHS":

> "R u in ny. I'm st Carlyle."

Lawrence Henry Summers. Former Secretary of the Treasury. Former President of Harvard University. Director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama. Texting a convicted sex offender from the Carlyle Hotel in midtown Manhattan like a college roommate.

Not a scheduled meeting through staff. Not a formal invitation routed through assistants. A direct, spontaneous text: are you around, I'm at the Carlyle. Nine years after Epstein's conviction for procuring a minor for prostitution.

The Brookline Invitation

**March 25, 2018.** Sarah Mapes — one of Summers' assistants — emails Lesley Groff, Epstein's personal assistant:

> "Larry was wondering if Jeffrey might be able to come to his house in Brookline."

Not Epstein's mansion. Not a restaurant. Not a university office. Summers invited Jeffrey Epstein to his private residence in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The logistics assembled: Private jet from Teterboro Airport. Tristar limousine on the ground. A full Harvard schedule packed around the visit — George Church at 1pm, Martin Nowak at 2pm, dinner with Summers at his home.

Summers wasn't being summoned. He was hosting.

**June 18, 2013.** The first documented reference. Groff's note to Epstein about an upcoming Cambridge trip:

> "Larry is at the top of the list to see!"

This phrase wasn't a one-time enthusiasm. Across six years of Harvard trip planning — 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 — every trip to Cambridge included attempts to schedule Summers. His assistants' names rotated (Julie Shample, Sarah Mapes, Rachel Kress, Lindsay Jones) but the pattern didn't.

**February 9, 2018.** Epstein sets the Harvard priority order for an upcoming trip:

> "Joi first not Chomsky. Maybe Summers."

**Joi Ito** — then director of the MIT Media Lab, who would resign in disgrace over Epstein connections. **Noam Chomsky** — the most cited living intellectual. And "maybe Summers" — a former Treasury Secretary positioned as a standing agenda item, not a special occasion.

Groff's response when told Summers was in Miami: "We always like to try!"

**September 22, 2014.** An alert from Epstein's staff:

> "Larry Summers is here!"

Physical presence confirmed. Same day, Epstein's driver chauffeured Summers to a UN event. The infrastructure wasn't just scheduling meetings — it was providing transportation, coordinating movements, integrating Summers into the household operation.

Dinner with Woody Allen

**November 30, 2018.** Seven months before Epstein's arrest. The evening scheduling email:

> "Woody/Soon Yi confirmed at 7pm. Do you want Larry Summers to arrive at 7pm as well?"

Epstein's response:

> "Tell Woody 7:30."

A former Treasury Secretary. A director credibly accused of molesting his adopted daughter. A convicted sex offender. And the sex offender is staggering the arrivals — Summers at 7:00, Allen at 7:30 — managing the social choreography of his dinner party.

This is at 9 East 71st Street. The same townhouse that prosecutors would later describe as a site of systematic sexual abuse. Seven months before the FBI walked in.

The Harvard Circuit

Summers wasn't an isolated contact. He was the anchor of a rotation.

Every Epstein trip to Cambridge followed the same circuit: **Summers → Joi Ito → Noam Chomsky → Martin Nowak → Danny Hillis → George Church**. Nowak's office at 1 Brattle Square was Epstein's de facto Cambridge headquarters.

**May 2, 2018.** A single day's schedule:

- 10:00-11:15am — Larry Summers at Harvard Kennedy School

- Afternoon — Danny Hillis

- Evening — Joi Ito

**May 6, 2018.** Four days later:

- Dinner at Martin Nowak's — Epstein rescheduled his entire trip to accommodate Summers' availability

**October 15, 2018.** Martin Nowak's office:

- 5:30-6:30pm — Summers "to catch up." Staff offered to pre-read materials if Summers wanted to discuss anything specific.

The meetings were substantive, recurring, and scheduled around Summers' calendar — not the other way around.

The Island Thread

**December 2, 2018.** A travel coordination email about a Harvard trip. Somewhere in the thread:

> "Larry Summers might ride with us."

In the same thread, a pilot's question:

> "LSJ after that?"

LSJ — **Little St. James.** Epstein's private island. The one prosecutors described as a crime scene.

There is no confirmation that Summers flew to Little St. James. But his name and the island appear in the same travel coordination thread. The pilot asking "LSJ after that?" follows a discussion of who's riding where. The juxtaposition is the government's, not ours.

The Final Dinner

**April 15-16, 2019.** Three months before Epstein's arrest. The scheduling email:

> "Larry Summers confirmed for dinner at 6pm at 9 East 71st Street."

The full household was mobilized. This is the last documented social engagement between Summers and Epstein — a dinner at the townhouse, three months before the FBI arrived.

Two weeks later, on April 29, a final communication. Summers had ruptured both quadriceps tendons. His office relayed:

> "He would love to hear from you."

A former Treasury Secretary, in a hospital bed, wanting to hear from Jeffrey Epstein.

What This Means

Larry Summers served as Secretary of the Treasury under Bill Clinton. He was president of the most prestigious university in the world. He was the top economic advisor to the president during the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Between 2013 and 2019, across eight documented meetings and dozens of scheduling emails, he maintained an active, bidirectional relationship with a convicted sex offender. He texted Epstein casually. He invited him to his home. He sat at dinner with Woody Allen at the townhouse prosecutors would later identify as a crime scene. His name appeared in a travel thread alongside "LSJ" — Epstein's private island. And from a hospital bed, he sent word that he'd love to hear from Jeffrey Epstein.

He was "at the top of the list" every time Epstein went to Cambridge. Not once. Not twice. For six years.
