# The Heaviest Senator
We ran every sitting and former U.S. Senator through 398,560 DOJ documents.
George Mitchell came back with 2,393 hits. CARVER score: 25/30. The highest-scoring Senator in the Epstein files.
Former Senate Majority Leader. Good Friday Agreement broker. Obama's Middle East Envoy. DLA Piper chairman. Red Sox board member.
And a man whose personal cell phone number is sitting in Jeffrey Epstein's files.
"My Very Close Friend"
December 4, 2011. Epstein writing to Sultan Bin Sulayem — the Dubai ports magnate:
*"George Mitchell is my very close friend and chairman of Piper."*
A convicted sex offender leveraging the former Senate Majority Leader's name with Middle Eastern business contacts. Not an acquaintance. Not "someone I met at a party." **My very close friend.**
Mitchell had already served as Obama's Special Envoy for Middle East Peace (2009-2011). He'd brokered the Northern Ireland Good Friday Agreement. He'd led the MLB steroid investigation. He was chairman of DLA Piper, one of the world's largest law firms.
And Jeffrey Epstein was name-dropping him to Gulf state billionaires.
The Post-Conviction Calendar
Every interaction we've found is post-conviction. Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008. The Mitchell documents begin in 2010 and continue through 2016.
This wasn't someone who cut ties after conviction. This was a relationship that deepened.
**August 2, 2010:** *"George Mitchell returned your phone call."*
**August 4, 2010:** *"Sen Mitchell just called back. He is in Maine and will be leaving for the Middle East."* — He was the active U.S. Special Envoy at this point. Coordinating travel schedules with a convicted sex offender while representing the United States government.
**August 13, 2010:** Lesley Groff calls Mitchell's office about the Yom Kippur Break-Fast dinner, September 18. *"It would mean a lot to you if the Senator could join you."* — Not a business meeting. A holy day dinner.
**June 13, 2010:** Epstein to Groff: *"Contact George Mitchell, tell him I will be in Thursday and Friday, and Mandelson will be at the house if he has time."* — Mitchell invited to the house alongside Peter Mandelson. The British Establishment and the American Senate at a convicted sex offender's residence.
**November 30, 2010:** *"Might the Senator like to stop by and sit down for a chat with you and Andrew?"* — Andrew. Prince Andrew. The man a jury later found liable for sexual abuse.
The Gates Lunch
February 2013. Boris Nikolic — Bill Gates' science advisor, later named in Epstein's will as successor executor — compiled guest lists.
**EFTA01905944** — Epstein to Nikolic: *"People for Bill: Sen George Mitchell, Leon Panetta, Woody Allen... Victoria's Secret models?"*
A U.S. Senator. The former CIA Director. A filmmaker with his own allegations. And Victoria's Secret models. On the same list. For a dinner hosted by a convicted sex offender.
Groff to Epstein, February 11: *"Did you wish me to contact Senator George Mitchell now re a possible lunch with you and Bill Gates?"*
Epstein: *"Yea."*
Groff left Mitchell a voicemail. Mitchell declined — not because Epstein was a convicted sex offender, but because he had a Red Sox board meeting in Fort Myers. His assistant called back with a warm, polite decline.
*"Senator Mitchell appreciates your kind invitation to possibly have lunch with you and Bill Gates on March 1, but he has a once a year meeting in Ft. Myers, FL for the Board of Directors for the Red Sox."*
The invitation wasn't shocking. The decline wasn't principled. It was a scheduling conflict.
The State Department Call
July 24, 2012. Groff, trying to track Mitchell for Epstein, called the State Department.
*"Called the State Dept. looking for Senator Mitchell and was told he is no longer there, he is back with Piper."*
Epstein's assistant called the United States State Department to locate a former Special Envoy so a convicted sex offender could schedule a social visit. And somebody at State told her where he went.
Ann Ungar, Mitchell's assistant, became a regular contact. Julia Reed from Mitchell's office coordinated schedules. This wasn't hidden. This was institutional.
The Cell Phone
**July 25, 2012:** *"Senator Mitchell called to let you know he is spending the summer in Maine... give him a call... 202-538-1477 cell."*
**May 23, 2011:** *"Senator Mitchell gave me his new cell number!! Shall I pass it on to Nili?"*
Nili is Nili Priell — Ehud Barak's assistant. Mitchell's personal cell number being shared from Epstein's orbit to Barak's orbit. The former Senate Majority Leader's private line flowing through the social network of a convicted sex offender and a former Israeli Prime Minister who maintained an apartment in Epstein's building.
What Fell Out: Kathy Ruemmler
Pulling the Mitchell thread led us to something bigger.
Kathy Ruemmler. White House Counsel to President Obama, 2011-2014. Then partner at Latham & Watkins. **4,985 estimated hits in the Epstein files.**
That's more than Mitchell. More than Prince Andrew. More than most of the names that make headlines.
Her Facebook Chief Legal Officer application — addressed to "Sheryl" Sandberg, referencing conversations with "Mark" Zuckerberg — was routed through Jeffrey Epstein's email in July 2018.
March 15, 2018: *"Given that my current specialty is men behaving badly, that would be fitting..."* — discussing potential impeachment counsel work.
July 2015: *"Made it to Paris. Ariane and I are walking/shopping. What are you up to?"*
July 2015, at a bank hotel: *"I had a massage and a mani/pedi here... they said everything had been billed to the bank."*
September 2015: *"One of the many reasons I like you so much."*
October 2014: *"Chief of staff is calling. Will call you right after."* — The White House chief of staff interrupting her calls with a convicted sex offender.
January 2016: *"The only thing I feel badly about now is that I allowed him to manipulate me for so long."* — Who manipulated her? Epstein? Someone else?
Obama's top lawyer. Paris trips. Hotel bills. Job applications routed through a pedophile's inbox. "Men behaving badly" as a self-described specialty.
4,985 documents. Zero criminal charges.
The Catsimatidis Dinner
While Mitchell was the heaviest Democrat, the Republican side has its own entry.
January 2013. John Catsimatidis — Red Apple Group CEO, future NYC mayoral candidate — invited Epstein to a private dinner at his Manhattan residence with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Two invitations. January 16 and January 23. The second one:
*"The Senator asked Chairman Ed Cox and myself to keep the group small so he could have time to speak with everyone."*
Ed Cox — chairman of the New York Republican Party. Richard Nixon's son-in-law.
"Keep the group small." Post-conviction. Epstein invited to an intimate dinner with the man who would become the most powerful Republican in the Senate. This is bipartisan.
The Social Graph
Mitchell didn't exist in isolation in the files. He existed at the intersection:
| Name | How They Connect Through Mitchell |
|---|---|
| Bill Gates | Lunch scheduling, Boris Nikolic guest lists |
| Peter Mandelson | Invited to Epstein's house on same days |
| Prince Andrew | "A chat with you and Andrew" |
| Larry Summers | "Mitchell and Summers on your radar" |
| Ehud Barak | Cell number shared with Barak's assistant |
| Leon Panetta | Same dinner guest list (former CIA Director) |
| Woody Allen | Same dinner guest list |
| Jes Staley | "He would like to meet Jes at another time" |
| Donald Trump | Same birthday book contact list |
The same rotation. The same house. The same calendar managed by Lesley Groff.
