# The Paul Weiss Problem: How Goldman Sachs' Outside Counsel Got Tangled in the Epstein Files
**Published:** February 15, 2026
**Reading time:** 5 minutes
The Short Version
Brad Karp is the Chairman of Paul Weiss, one of the most powerful law firms on Wall Street. Paul Weiss represents Goldman Sachs.
We found documents showing Brad Karp was emailing Jeffrey Epstein and visiting his New York townhouse - years after Epstein's first conviction.
Why This Matters
When Goldman Sachs announced that Kathy Ruemmler (their Chief Legal Officer) was resigning on February 15, 2026, many people thought it was just about her own connections to Epstein.
But the documents tell a bigger story.
What We Found
Document EFTA02484090 (April 2, 2018)
Brad Karp emails Jeffrey Epstein about stock sale documents:
> "I don't have this from [him]. I believe our friend may have gotten it from M. I'm going to send that to you. But please don't let him know that I shared it. It is supposed to be strictly confidential."
This shows Karp sharing confidential financial documents with Epstein - a convicted sex offender - in 2018.
Document EFTA02484068 (April 2, 2018)
Epstein emails Karp asking for the documents:
> "leon said you had a copy of the stock sale [agreement]. can you forward to me?"
"Leon" refers to Leon Black, the Apollo Global Management founder who has acknowledged paying Epstein $158 million.
Document EFTA02218810 (July 11, 2017)
Lesley Groff - Epstein's assistant who was named as a "potential co-conspirator" in his Non-Prosecution Agreement - schedules Brad Karp to visit Epstein:
> "Hello Brad. Reconfirming you will come see Jeffrey at 2:30pm today. 9 East 71st street between 5th and Madison."
9 East 71st is Epstein's infamous Manhattan townhouse.
Document EFTA02492648 (July 17, 2015)
Epstein invites Larry Summers to a dinner that includes Brad Karp and Woody Allen:
> "having dinner with brad karp (paul weiss) and woody allen tues at 730, you are welcome, brad would be a good person for you"
Document EFTA01919828 (June 4, 2014)
Epstein asks Bill Gates to call Brad Karp about a project:
> "I think it would be helpful if at sometime in the very near future if Bill would call Brad Karp, senior managing partner of Paul Weiss, and tell him how glad he is that Russo and Erring are working on the complications of this future Daf project."
The Connection Chain
Here's the simple version:
What This Means
For Goldman Sachs
Their Chief Legal Officer (Ruemmler) had documented connections to Epstein. Now we know their outside law firm's chairman also had a relationship with Epstein.
This creates potential conflicts of interest when Goldman needs legal advice about Epstein-related matters.
For Paul Weiss
Brad Karp met with a convicted sex offender at his residence and shared confidential financial documents with him. This raises questions about the firm's ethical standards.
For Other Paul Weiss Clients
Paul Weiss represents many Fortune 500 companies. Those clients may need to consider whether their outside counsel's Epstein connections create reputational or legal risks.
